Speaker – Dr Peter Friedlander, Senior Lecturer in Hindi-Urdu, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific

Abstract: This project looks at the relationship between sacred sites and stories. It is based on field work done in India and Mauritius and on textual sources. The focus is on the relationship between sacred site stories and rituals and practices done at the sites. I am comparing current living stories told at sites in India with similar stories recorded as being told at Buddhist sacred sites in India by Chinese pilgrims to India and currently told at the sites today.
